James F. Cawley, Sr. was born and raised in Philadelphia as the second oldest of nine children. His father, James died suddenly and Jim helped his mother, Alice, raise his siblings. In 1968, he married Mary O’Brien and they moved to Levittown. They had two children James and Therese. Mary succumbed to cancer in 1990. Jim married Patricia Smith in 1998. They continued to live in Levittown until Jim’s death in 2004.
Throughout his life Jim was a fiercely proud American of Irish descent. Jim served his country in the US Army. He also volunteered his time in several leadership roles in multiple organizations dedicated to celebrating Irish heritage.
Jim was a life member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Jim joined the AOH at the age of 16 and later became a 27 year President of Division 87 of Philadelphia County. He served as State Organizer and as Chairman of multiple committees on the PA State Board of the AOH. Jim was the founding Parade Director of the Bucks County St. Patrick’s Day Parade and he was an 18 year Parade Director for the Philadelphia St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Jim was part of the team that founded the Irish Festival on Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia. He was a delegate from the Irish Community to the Eucharistic Congress in 1977. He was also a member and former officer of the Irish Cultural Society of Bucks County. Jim was also a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
